Why join

Five reasons it matters now

Free while you study

No dues, no portal, no payment. Student membership stays free for the duration of your degree.

Know your rights before you need them

The Architects Award 2020 sets minimums for pay, overtime, and leave. Most workers don't know what they're owed when they start. Walk into your first job already familiar with it.

Run student campaigns

Unpaid internships, studio hours, course costs, mental health. The student conditions you talk about with classmates are organising material. The union backs you to do something about them.

Move into practice already organised

When you start working, upgrade for workplace support, contract reviews, and individual representation. Your first day in practice isn't a cold start.

Pitch what you want the union to back

Student members can submit Expressions of Interest to the committee. Events, publishing, advocacy, anything that pushes architecture toward something more progressive. If a worker-led intervention in the profession would make a difference, the committee wants to back it.

Register

Two minutes. We'll be in touch.

The Students Working Group reviews each submission and reaches out within two weeks to help you set up your free membership. Auto-acknowledgement in your inbox right away.

Why now

The culture starts at uni.

The all-nighter you survive in studio is the same hour that won't get paid in your first job. The culture starts at uni; we're trying to break it before it becomes a career.

The younger you are in architecture, the worse your wellbeing.

The average architecture student reports anxiety at a level that would meet the criteria for a clinical diagnosis. The profession's overwork norms don't start when you graduate. They start in studio. Joining the union early is how you build the muscle to refuse them.

Early-career rate is about $20.66/month (~$248/year), fully tax-deductible. A low rate for working students and recent graduates, sitting well under the standard tier. Picked up paid work while you study? You can upgrade now and use those services straight away. The Students Working Group walks you through it whenever you're ready.

A role with progression

Architecture Student Ambassadors

We're appointing Architecture Student Ambassadors at universities across every state. You'll help us reach more students through SONA-style activities, campus events, faculty engagement, and guest lectures. The on-the-ground work of building the union inside the schools. With experience, ambassadors progress to Senior Ambassador roles, leading events independently and mentoring others.

  • Your first year of paid membership covered when you graduate
  • Career coaching and public speaking training
  • Event experience and a real organising track record

Tick the Ambassador interest box on the form above and the Students Working Group will reach out with the role brief.

The union inside Australian schools of architecture. Organises student members, runs campaigns on student conditions, and moves graduates into workplace organising as they enter practice.

Questions

Things students ask

What happens after I submit?

The Students Working Group reviews your interest and helps you set up your free membership on the Professionals Australia members database. Plan on two weeks turnaround. You'll get an automatic acknowledgement immediately so you know we received it.

Is membership really free? What’s the catch?

No catch. Free covers being part of the union: campaigns, events, training, the Students Working Group, ambassador opportunities, and the broader member network. Member-only support services (workplace support, contract reviews, individual representation in disputes, legal referrals) sit behind the paid tier. While you’re studying you don’t generally need those. Once you’re employed, you can upgrade.

What happens if I start working while I’m still studying?

If you pick up paid work in architecture (a paid internship, a junior role, anything earning) the early-career rate is around $20.66/month, about a sixth of the standard rate. Tax-deductible. That tier unlocks the member-only support services (workplace advice, contract reviews) so you can use them while you’re still in studio. The Students Working Group walks you through the upgrade when you’re ready.

Do I have to pay anything later?

Not while you’re a full-time student. The free tier stays free for the duration of your degree. Once you’re working and want member-only support, the early-career rate is about $20.66/month (~$248/year), fully tax-deductible, processed via Professionals Australia. The Students Working Group walks you through the upgrade when the time comes.

I'm in a related course (interior, landscape, planning, urban design). Am I covered?

Yes. UAW covers students across the architectural and spatial-design disciplines we organise: interior design, landscape architecture, urban design, and urban + regional planning. Pick the closest stage from the dropdown; the Students Working Group will sort the rest.

Why isn't the normal Join button available for students?

Professionals Australia hosts the members database. They're our parent union. Their online quickjoin form doesn't currently have a code for the free student tier, so anyone joining through it would be billed at the standard rate. We're routing students through this form instead while that's resolved. The membership itself is identical; only the join pathway differs.

Now, not later.

Architecture won't unbreak itself. Two minutes to register, then we're in this together.
