Privacy Policy

The UNION OF ARCHITECTURAL Workers ("we", "our", "us") is committed to protecting the privacy and personal information of our members, supporters, and website visitors. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, how we store it, and what rights you have over your data.

What we collect

We may collect the following personal information:

  • Contact details, name, email address, phone number, postal address, and postcode when you join, contact us, or sign up to our newsletter.
  • Professional details, your role, employer (if you choose to share it), employment type, and career stage when you complete the membership form or participate in our surveys.
  • Survey responses, anonymised salary, conditions, and workplace data submitted through our campaigns.
  • Event attendance, RSVP details and attendance records for events you register for.
  • Website usage data, anonymised analytics data such as page views, referral sources, and browser type.
  • Advertising measurement data, information about your visit to our public pages, collected by the third-party measurement tools described under "Advertising and measurement" below.
  • Petition signatures, your name, email address, postcode, firm size, classification, and whether you are a UAW member, when you sign a public petition.

Why we collect it

We use your personal information to:

  • Process and manage your union membership.
  • Communicate with you about union activities, campaigns, and events.
  • Provide workplace support and advice when you request it.
  • Aggregate anonymised data for research and advocacy (e.g. salary survey reports).
  • Improve our website and services.
  • Comply with our legal obligations as an organisation.

We will never sell your personal information to third parties. We will never share your membership status or personal details with your employer without your explicit written consent.

How we store it

Your data is stored securely using Supabase, a cloud database platform with enterprise-grade encryption at rest and in transit. Access to personal data is restricted to authorised committee members who need it to carry out union business.

We retain your personal information for as long as your membership is active, plus a reasonable period afterwards to comply with legal and administrative requirements. You may request deletion of your data at any time (see "Your rights" below).

Who can access it

Access to your personal information is limited to:

  • Authorised UAW committee members carrying out union administrative duties.
  • Our hosting and database providers (Cloudflare and Supabase), who process data on our behalf under their respective privacy policies and data processing agreements.
  • Our advertising measurement and campaign email providers (Meta, LinkedIn, and ActiveCampaign), as described under "Advertising and measurement" below.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share your membership status, your workplace enquiries, or the content of anything you tell us with advertisers or marketing platforms. We do not share your data with any third party not listed above.

Advertising and measurement

The UAW runs paid campaigns on Facebook and LinkedIn to reach architectural workers who are not yet members. To understand whether those campaigns are working, our public pages carry three third-party measurement tools:

  • Meta pixel (Facebook), which records that a visit or a petition signature happened, so we can tell which advertisements led people to act.
  • LinkedIn Insight Tag, which does the same for our LinkedIn advertising.
  • ActiveCampaign site tracking, which is the platform that hosts our campaign petitions and mailing lists.

These tools set cookies and record browsing information about your visit. This is a change from our previous position, and we are stating it plainly: these are third-party tracking cookies, and we did not use them before this campaign.

Where they do and do not run. These tools run on our ordinary public pages only. They are deliberately switched off on our administrative area, meeting minutes, expression-of-interest forms, submission pages, member pages, and committee pages. Union governance and the personal information you send us are not passed to advertising platforms.

Overseas disclosure. Meta, LinkedIn, and ActiveCampaign store and process this information outside Australia, principally in the United States. Australian Privacy Principle 8 requires us to tell you this before it happens, which is the purpose of this section.

How to opt out. You can block these tools using your browser's cookie and tracking-protection settings, a content blocker, or the advertising preference controls offered by Facebook and LinkedIn. Blocking them does not affect your ability to use this website, sign a petition, join the union, or contact us.

Petitions

When you sign a UAW petition, the details you enter are submitted directly to ActiveCampaign, the campaign platform operated by Professionals Australia, of which the UAW is a division. We use those details to keep you informed about the campaign you signed and to demonstrate the scale of support to bodies such as the Fair Work Commission.

Petition signatures are not shared with employers. Signing a petition does not make you a member, and being a member is not required to sign.

Your rights

Under Australian privacy law and our commitment to transparency, you have the right to:

  • Access, request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correction, ask us to correct any inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Deletion, request that we delete your personal information, subject to any legal obligations we may have to retain certain records.
  • Withdrawal of consent, withdraw your consent for us to process your data at any time (e.g. unsubscribe from the newsletter).
  • Complaint, lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner if you believe we have breached your privacy.
